On this day in 1961, British lawyer Peter Benenson called for an international campaign against “prisoners of conscience” after he read about two Portuguese students sentenced to seven years in prison for the crime of raising their glasses in a toast to freedom. From this efforts Amnesty International, the largest Human Rights organization in the world, was born. |
